Who ran the Globes? Girls.

Last night, Awards Season had its official debut with the 72nd Annual Golden Globe awards. From now until Oscar night, there will be intense campaigning, fabulous fashion, and an exorbitant amount of partying from Hollywoods brightest stars as they celebrate what was truly a great year. While there were no real trends or sweeps, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made it very clear that when it comes to TV at least, women are indeed forces to be reckoned with.

With an opening that managed to make everyone laugh, cringe, and feel a deep sense of patriotism, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hit it out of the park yet again. From Emma Stone’s “big eyes” and Amal Clooney’s resume to North Korea and the Bill Cosby impression-off, Fey and Poehler quickly solidified themselves as this century’s comedy duo to aspire to.

Fey, Cho, and Poehler made us laugh, think, and cringe.

Keeping with the theme of the night, they enlisted the help of Margaret Cho – yet another female comedian – in a hilarious running sketch that felt very much in the vein of SNL in its prime. Classic and contemporary, simply put they nailed it. Now we just need to convince them to do it every year…

“One woman summed up the thoughts of many by saying she wasn’t sure why she’d written but she just felt in some way she wanted to be heard. I’d like to say, I heard you and I hope saying this so publicly in some way means you feel the world hears you.” -Joanne Froggatt

In what was probably the most difficult and shocking storyline on Downton Abbey to date, Joanne Froggatt brilliantly and truthfully navigated her character’s rape and it’s rippling aftermath. Her depiction of Anna’s emotional trauma giving way to her fierce need to protect her husband was as heartbreaking as it was captivating. As moved as I was by her performance, never did I think that HFPA would take notice when the formidable Kathy Bates and crowd favorite Uzo Aduba are in the same category. As Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Minisieries, or TV Movie encompasses all supporting characters in both comedy and drama, Froggatt’s win is a well deserved award indeed.

One of the biggest upsets of the night came when freshman Gina Rodriguez won Best Actress in a TV Comedy for the CW’s Jane the Virgin, beating out Lena Dunham, Edie Falco, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Taylor Schilling. Yes, this was CW’s first nomination and yes the show is a cultural phenomenon but I cannot say what this truly means for the Latin community better than Rodriguez herself did in her acceptance speech:

“This award is so much more myself. It represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes.” – Gina Rodriguez

Apparently that was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of breaking ground at the Globes. What I found to be the most profound was that both series awards – Best TV Comedy or Musical and Best TV Drama – went to shows created and written by women. Transparent‘s Jill Soloway and The Affair‘s Sarah Treem spearheaded and delivered shows that beat out old favorites to claim the top TV honors of the night. It is important to note that 4 out of the 5 Comedy Series nominees this year were in fact created by women, furthering the claim that TV is much more evolved and more likely to take risks than its cinematic counterpart.

So why do the Golden Globes matter so much? The answer to that question lies in who the Hollywood Foreign Press Association actually represent. As an international body of journalists reporting on the industry from outside the United States, HFPA is a good gage of how the world sees the work that Hollywood is producing and putting out there. In other words, the Globes can tell us what is actually resonating outside the giant industry bubble. This is why their choices tend to be what some may call “erratic” or “out of touch” as they tend to be on the outside looking in. You can take that anyway you like but to me, the Golden Globes proved that while women are making great strides in TV, the film industry remains somewhat of a boys club. However, I think Treem said it best in accepting the top TV honor: “Women have been waiting in the wings for a long time. They were ready for center storyteller stage.”

Buildable Berry Lips: from sheer to bold

Buildable Berry: from sheer to bold

This fall, its all about those berry lips so here’s a collection from the most sheer to that daring matte bold:

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey –  A cult classic for a reason, this formula delivers a warm wash of color that just make your lips look better. This was actually the first lipstick I ever bought (ah, nostalgia) and I have used this shade for many a bride ever since. If you are at all reluctant at the whole prospect of a berry lip, this is the shade for you.

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 in Berry – The name says it all but while this might look like just a fancy chapstick, Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments deliver on three fronts: sun protection, lip hydration, and color payoff. The berry shade is especially saturated while still technically being sheer but I must warn you, once you buy one of these, you will want one in every freaking color. They are the Lays potato chips of the tinted lip balm industry.

Bobbi Brown Art Stick in Bright Raspberry – If the shade works all year round and the formula is designed to be used on lip and cheeks, my only question is why is it not in your purse right now? Huh?!? Yes, I am giving you some serious side eye right now…

Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lip Crayon in Framboise – New to the market, these smooth-like-butta crayons feel incredible and look even better. They are also made with organic ingredients and are gluten free which is HUGE for the natural beauty market.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge in 10 Raspberry – When you don’t want your lipstick to move AT ALL then you need to get your hands on MUFE’s Aqua Rouge. HANDS DOWN the best water-proof and kiss-proof lip stick/stain EVER – I speak from experience 😉

Orchid is the new black

Orchid is the new black
It was quite a busy weekend for Hollywood as the White House Correspondents Dinner and the Met Gala gave the most “it” celebrities a chance to strut their stuff.  Whilst flipping though images of both events, I detected a pattern – orange may be hot right now but purple, more specifically orchid, was the hue that hogged the spotlight. Everyone from Lupita Nyong’o to Joan Smalls to Beyoncé to Selena Gomez was rocking some derivative of this shade on their lips, eyes or even in their gown.

Spring Fashion: NYC vs. LA

People think that New Yorkers have attitudes, but what’s really going on when we side-eye tourists or get snippy with people singing “Happy” on the train is that we place a lot of value on chill. Got tickets to see Hedwig? That’s awesome, but be chill. Yes ma’am, that is that building from that movie, now chill out and keep walking. You saw a Gyllenhaal in A Voce? Stop staring, have some chill. Considering that on the inside we’re high-strung, caffeine addicted workaholics, maintaining a chilled-out exterior matters to us image-conscious New Yorkers.

So how does that chill translate to spring fashion? We keep our trends-per-outfit ratio low, so everyone knows that we saw the stills from the Nicole Miller show but have more sense than to go head-to-toe in Beetlejuice print or moody florals. The outfits below all incorporate some of my favorite runway trends for this spring, but in moderation because this is New York and -say it with me- we’re chill.

The first outfit is my “what I wish I were wearing” set and includes a pair of Dolce and Gabbana skinny pants that have a dark deciduous print that toes the line between floral and jungle. The second outfit is “what I’m actually wearing” and includes a collared denim dress and a Cambridge Satchel in that off-robin blue that’s been going strong since 2012. The third is “what some cool kid is probably wearing” and involves a colored metallic Balmain skirt and lilac Joomi Lim studs. Maximum two “on trend” pieces or colors per outfit; maximum chill.

-Alexis

Los Angeles doesn’t ease into spring like New York does. Without the luxury of definitive seasons, it just goes from chilly to HOT in one week. No joke. This year that weather switch coincided nicely with what I refer to as “The Coachellaover” – the week after Coachella – so that all the easy, breezy, hippy styles debuted in the heat of the desert were suddenly out in full force here. Gone are the sweaters and boots we were sporting just last week and good riddance (until it gets “cold” again which for us is anything under 65 degrees.) Suddenly florals, crop tops, fringe and braided headbands are everywhere. There is no escape. Any you know what? I LOVE it.

My first outfit is my ideal festival look. It’s easy but fun with a colorful fringe kimono, Rag & Bone denim shorts, and a crochet top. All were staples at Coachella as it is hot as Hades during the day before the temperature drops drastically at night. Just because you’re cold doesn’t mean you can’t look cute, amiright? Fedoras are HUGE this year and so are T-strap sandals – I have a thing for JCrew accessories because they are always on point and good quality.

May and June seem to be the months where everyone decided we shall have 400 brunches, baby showers, graduations, day weddings, and bridal luncheons in an eight week span. In other words – time to dress it up a bit without breaking the bank. Time to pull a Kate Middleton and cycle some faves, pairing different accessories with some fun prints. I’m IN LOVE with this Floral Sateen Gap dress that is colorful enough to stand on its own but really pops with SJP’s “Lady” pumps and Rebecca Minkoff’s Mini 5 Zip in “Minty”.

If I ever find myself in need of fashion inspiration, I love to browse Topshop. I think they truly have the right balance of trend and classic – those Brits are pretty good at that. My last outfit is sexy and sophisticated with a striped crop top and a bright midi skirt. Both are from Topshop but this can be created with a pencil skirt as well. I like the midi because it is a classic look that is getting some well deserved attention this season. This is also a great way to wear quite a few trends at once without trying too hard. I am currently drooling over those gladiator Via Spiga shoes and would probably just finish this look off with a long necklace and a cuff. Where can this be worn? ANYWHERE – work, date night, girls night out – who cares? With style this deep, you’ll be fabulous, dahling.

Bobbi Travels Light

Bobbi Brown represents the every woman – Classic AND fun –  retro AND modern – chic AND funky. We are all women and we are all beautiful but what makes Bobbi unique is her ability to listen to women and give them what they need to be their MOST beautiful. There are a few items I’ve had since the dawn of cosmetic time from Ms. Brown like her Shimmer Brick, Creamy Concealer, and Foundation Stick but whether you are a fan or not, you owe it to yourself to try two of her latest (and possibly greatest) products.

A California Gal’s Wet Dream -or- The Natural Products Expo West

Great weather, better products

Great weather, even better products at the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA

Every year, thousands converge on the city of Anaheim not to spend the day with a giant mouse and his pals but to shop and sample the latest trends in natural food, beauty, health and wellness. With over 20,000 square feet of space at their disposal,  2,000+ companies put their best products on display in an attempt to connect with suppliers, distributors, and consumers in one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Big name giants like KIND and Annie’s were just a few booths down from startups that were launching just this year. It is an eye-opening experience that will turn even the most skeptical into a more conscious, educated consumer.  How is it only in town for three days???

This was my second year attending Natural Products Expo so I knew for the most part what to expect. I had to pace myself. I had to breathe. And I had to wear REALLY comfortable shoes. However, this year I had the added challenge of my new Paleo diet (more on that journey to come) which switched my focus from solely health and beauty to more food and nutrition based. It didn’t occur to me until I was quite literally surrounded by thousands of tempting sweet and savory samples being all but thrusted in my face that this was going to be really freaking hard.

Luckily, I found a few things that would satisfy my cravings including Mammoth Bars. With a slogan like “Paleo for the Modern World”, how could I go wrong? Using organic sprouted nuts, dates, and sea salt, the guys behind Mammoth Bars let their ingredients do the talking. Not only are their bars a great mix of sweet and savory but they have solved my need for a quick, go to snack. For a true sweet tooth fix, there’s Emmy’s delicious macaroons which hare made with organic raw ingredients. The Lemon Ginger is out of this world. I’ve never had a coconut macaroon that tasted this good and wasn’t raw. I will be ordering cases of both these products today if not sooner.

Must...have...more Mammoth Bars and Emmy's Macaroons!!

Must…have…more Mammoth Bars and Emmy’s Macaroons!!

Beauty wise, I noticed that there seemed to be less brands than last year which was a bit disappointing. There were some pretty cool finds from smaller companies including Doctor Lip Bang’s Lip Freak – an all natural lip balm that tingles just because it can (I’m assuming its supposed to make kissing fun…I’d say I’d let you know but we all know that might take a while.) Another balm I really liked was the Passion Fruit Lip Butter from Rooted Beauty who’s product’s proceeds fund different individual women and girls around the world. I was really struck by that and saw that while this “Toms effect” is a growing trend in the Natural Product industry, Rooted beauty found a way to make it personal and, in doing so, beautiful. In breaking with the traditional lip balm idea, Clean George puts healing salves in a stick, making them easy to used and much more sanitary. I picked up samples of Stuffed Up (a natural Vicks alternative) and Chill Out (self explanatory…it’s got lavender.)

Battle of the Balms: Contenders include Rooted Beauty's Lip Butter, Clean George's Chill out and Stuffed up, The Honest Co's Organic Lip Balm in Lavender Mint, Doctor Lip Bang's Lip Freak, Burt's Bees New Hydrating Lip Balm

The real joy in this expo comes in the new products that will be launching this year. From Suja to Pacifica to J.R. Watkins – there are a lot of really exciting things coming out that I will be sure to share here as they do. I think that anyone wanting to better understand ANYTHING about products that are just better for you should think about attending one of these shows. The East show is in Baltimore, MD this fall and it is sure to change your life. For good.
